# Settlement

> When markets settle, what source decides the outcome, how voids work, and what to do if you think a result is wrong.

Settlement is when a market is resulted and your balance updates. This page covers the process. The rules that decide each outcome are published per sport.

## The per-sport rules

The official resulting rules live at [magicmarkets.com/settlement-rules](https://magicmarkets.com/settlement-rules), with a page for each sport: American football, baseball, basketball, boxing and MMA, cricket, darts, esports, golf, ice hockey, politics, rugby, soccer and tennis. For a sport without a rules page, contact support before you trade.

Those pages are the authority on edge cases: abandonments, retirements, walkovers, changed venues, and how each market handles them. Read the page for your sport rather than reasoning from another one, because the rules differ. A retirement in tennis is not treated like an abandonment in football.

## Timing

Most markets settle shortly after the event finishes. Some take longer:

* Markets that depend on official confirmation wait for it. Some sports allow a result to be amended after the event. In boxing and MMA, for example, an amendment made within 24 hours of settlement to correct a reporting error is applied.
* Outright and specials markets settle when the competition concludes, which can be weeks or months after you place the trade.
* An event that is delayed or postponed holds its markets until it resolves or is voided under the rules for that sport.

The funds behind a position stay committed until the market settles. They are not available to trade with in the meantime, unless you close the position first.

## Voids

A void returns committed funds to both sides. It is not a loss and not a win.

Voids happen when an event does not take place as required, or when a market's conditions cannot be met. In football, for example, a postponed match voids undetermined positions if it does not start before 23:59 local time on its scheduled date. If a goal shown on the order ticket is later cancelled, by VAR or otherwise, trades matched while that score was displayed are void, either during the match or after it ends. The per-sport rules define exactly when.

## If you think a result is wrong

1. Read the settlement rules page for that sport first.
2. If you still disagree, contact support with the event, the market, the position and what you believe the correct result is.
3. If a market was settled in error, MagicMarkets resettles the whole market, so every position on it is corrected. Your balance can go up or down as a result.
