# Order did not fill

> Why an order sat unmatched, filled partly, or filled at a different price from the one you expected.

## It showed Filling and never matched

An unmatched order means nobody took the other side at your price.

* **Your limit was better than the market.** A buy below the market, or a sell above it, waits for the market to come to you. It may never do so.
* **The size was not there.** Your price was available, but not for the amount you wanted.
* **The market moved away.** It was matchable when you placed it and is no longer.
* **It expired.** A limit order waits only until the expiration set on the order ticket. After that it shows Not filled.

A limit order can get a better price, but it may not fill. If a fill matters more than the price, take what is on the book.

## It filled partly

Partial fills are normal. If 200 of 500 USDT matched, you hold a 200 USDT position and 300 USDT keeps working. Cancelling removes the unmatched remainder only. The matched part is a position and cannot be undone. Judge the outcome on your average matched price, not on the price you asked for.

## It filled at a different price

There are two usual explanations.

**Tick rounding.** Prices sit on a fixed schedule. If you set a buy limit between two valid prices, it moves up to the next valid price. A buy limit of 7.15 becomes 7.20, and the order does not fill at 7.00. For a sell, set a price on the tick schedule. See [Prices and ticks](/platform/prices-and-ticks).

**Filled better than asked.** A limit order matches at your price or better, so a better fill is normal. You will not be filled worse than your limit.

## The order ticket expired before I confirmed

A quote on the order ticket is valid for a few seconds only, because prices move. Refresh and take the current price. If this keeps happening, the market is moving quickly, and a limit order may suit you better.

## It says Not filled

The order finished without matching anything, usually because a limit order reached its expiration. No funds were committed and no money moved. Place a new one at a price the market can reach, or with a longer expiration.

## It says Void or Partial void

The market, or part of your position on it, was voided after your order matched, so those committed funds were returned. Nobody won and nobody lost. Voids follow the published [settlement rules](https://magicmarkets.com/settlement-rules) for each sport.

## I cannot sell on this market

Some markets are Buy only. On those you can Buy at the shown price or with a limit price, but you cannot Sell. The order ticket says so.

## It filled, but shows no profit or loss

A filled order is not a settled one. You hold an open position, and its profit and loss is unrealised until the event settles or you close the position yourself. See [Order statuses](/traders/trading/order-statuses).

## Through the API

If you trade through the API, see [Errors and rate limits](/developers/errors-and-rate-limits) for the error codes and common symptoms behind an order that did not fill.
